An all too popular scam among cybercriminals is to trick website visitors into downloading fake antivirus software by warning them that there computer is already infected. They will pretend to do a scan that comes up with all sorts of problems that can be fixed if you just download the paid version of the program.<\/p>\n

In most cases the problems were not only non existent but the software solution a victim pays for has no practical value. It is all just a scam to separate a user from their money, sometimes referred to as scareware.<\/p>\n

This is an issue that Comodo takes very seriously. In fact, In 2009,our CEOP Melih Abdulhayoglu<\/a> organized the Common Computing Security Standards Forum initially for the purpose of maintaining a list of legitimate antivirus engines. This was in response to “scareware” products that present themselves as antivirus software but are either adware or malware. According to the FBI, they are aware of an estimated loss to victims from rogue antivirus<\/a> software of as much as $150 million.<\/p>\n
