Firewall

A firewall is a protective barrier which safeguards computing devices from online threats. The primary purpose of the firewall software is to shield the computer from internet threats and the threats arising within the local network. Firewalls are an integral part of a sophisticated security framework for a network. It strengthens the security of computers connected on a network, such as LAN or the Internet.

What is the Role of a Firewall

The firewall software program protects the resources of a computer, both the hardware and the software. It validates the access, controls and manages the network traffic, keeps track of events, generates reports, and acts as an intermediary.

Why we need a firewall

A firewall is used to stop intrusion and provide a reliable and stable method of the access control policy. However, it is essential to know why we need a firewall and how it benefits us to carry on secure computing. Comprehend the goals of information security as it helps to get a clear picture of how a firewall may address the security requirements in a given environment.

Today, everybody connects on to high-speed internet, and computers connect to a broad network. Unless a robust firewall is installed, the user has limited control in supervising of downloading and uploading the content by which the protection is also limited.

Besides the advantages that we all celebrate with a lightning speed internet connection, there a few drawbacks that we need to be aware of to stay away from online or network dangers. Simply put, the very feature that makes a high-speed connection gainful to the user is also the same reason that makes it vulnerable.

High-speed Internet connections have the following features:

Constant IP – This helps the hacker or a cybercriminal to identify your system quickly. The same online criminal keeps coming back with the help of this detail.
High-Speed Access – A high speed internet access helps the hacker to operate much faster when attempting to break into your computer.
Always active connection – whenever the computer is connected to the internet, it is equally vulnerable.

With such vulnerabilities, it is easy for any online fraudster to get into the computer and steal valuable data or cause irreversible damage. This demands a robust firewall to take care of such situations.

How firewalls work

The firewall uses a wall of code that isolates a computing device from the Internet. It checks on every individual data packet as it arrives at either side of the firewall. Applied on both inbound and outbound packets, this helps to conclude whether it should be allowed to pass or blocked.

Firewalls improve security by facilitating granular control over the system functions, and processes that have access to networking resources. On the other hand, firewalls use different types of signatures and host conditions to allow or deny traffic. They are easy to install, setup and operate.

A firewall installed on a network manages and controls the traffic on the network segment. However, a host-based firewall can be executed directly on the systems themselves, such as with Internet Connection Firewall – ICF. The features and functioning of both the firewalls remain the same.

Comodo Firewall

Comodo Firewall offers superior protection to the Windows firewall as well as those provided by other security companies; it’s free including updates. Unlike other firewalls, it prevents malware from entering your PC in addition to providing standard firewall features. Comodo Firewall offers best-in-class security against inbound and outbound threats.

It includes Defense Plus an advanced protection system that continually monitors the activities of all executable files on a PC. With Defense Plus, you gain the advantage of default, and the only programs that are certified as safe by Comodo. Comodo Firewall can be installed individually or as a part of Comodo’s Internet Security Suite. For more details visit our official page!
